Janie Burns

Meadowlark Farm
Janie Burns of Meadowlark Farm in Nampa raises lambs, chickens and chicken eggs using organic methods. She is one of the leading voices in Idaho’s “local food movement.” She has watched with dismay as Idaho farms have dwindled from more than 40,000 in 1950 to just over 25,000 farms today. Most of those producers grow only one or two specialty commodity crops. Meadowlark Farm has been raising and selling grass-fed lamb and pastured poultry to discriminating eaters in southwest Idaho and eastern Oregon for over 29 years.

Janie has been active in providing local food for local people since 1989 when she started selling organic vegetables at Boise’s first downtown farmers’ market. She is a charter vendor of the new Boise Farmers Market where she sells grass-fed lamb and pastured poultry raised on her 16-acre Meadowlark Farm south of Nampa. Over the past 28 years, she has raised a wide variety of crops, sold to restaurants, CSA’s and to retail stores and participated in many events raising awareness about food system issues.
