Trailmix Keynote - Recipes for Taking a Food Business to the Next Level
Limited Capacity seats available

Everything in food is being called into question: Who owns it; who grows it; what’s in it; where to find it; how to eat it. Food has long been tangled up with culture, identity, health, energy, economics, and justice. Today, it’s increasingly tied to our relationship with nature and to climate change.  Eaters are driving the change. Entrepreneurs are sitting in the front of their bus, sharing their insatiable hunger for a fresh, better, kinder world through food. Their collective enthusiasm is building, and it is reshaping the industry in its path.

And yet, daunting obstacles lie ahead. Most new food businesses will ultimately fail. So how is the entrepreneur to navigate? I come from the Babson school of entrepreneurship – and live and build (and cook) by it. An entrepreneur’s staple ingredients are desire, what you know, who you know, and the resources you have at hand. Okay, but then what? In this tilt-a-whirl new food world, what are the steps for success? The good news is that the recipe can be shared, learned, and practiced—and you have plenty of great examples right here in Boise…

Trailmix is an exciting new event created to showcase new and innovative food product companies from around the Northwest. This event will create awareness for the food entrepreneurs and startups competing and give them networking opportunities with, industry leaders, investors and other companies. Trailmix is presented by Albertsons at Trailhead, in partnership with the Food Track of Boise Startup Week.

Foodsteading: Creating Places for Food
Limited Capacity filling up

Imagine if in every community, there was a place for food beyond the grocery store, restaurant, or farmers’ market.

Food options in communities are typically limited to grocery stores, restaurants, farmers markets and convenience stores--all "soloed" components to a challenged food system. The rise in health challenges creates a deep opportunity to collaborate in unique ways to address social issues. The importance of food usually gets lost amid the many others factors that drive community-level work. Hot-button topics such as education, housing, transportation, employment, healthcare and public safety dominate the conversations. Yes, food has its place in these realms — usually related to hunger and access to healthy food — but does it get the attention it deserves?

In a follow-up to her 2018 TEDx Boise talk, "Is there a place for food?" Shannon McGuire will share outcomes of the foodsteading movement happening in the Treasure Valley.

Following her presentation, McGuire will lead an in-depth discussion about the importance of connecting people to real food. The panel will detail how social enterprises are partnering with communities to advance local food system strategies with the ultimate goal being to create more food education and empowered destinations. McGuire will be joined on the panel by Dean Papé (deChase Miksis), Mo Valko (Boise Co-Op), and Kendra Witt-Doyle (Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation).
